A woman's experience of her boudoir portrait session by Karina Marie Diaz!!! A gift for her husband or a gift for herself?
This woman has inspired me to great depths of my heart and soul. She even sent me a CD of some of her favorite Ben Harper songs that I really enjoyed listening to during her portrait session. I encourage clients to bring their favorite music on their ipods to help inspire them to get in the mood. How incredibly thoughtful of her to take the time to prepare this gift for me! It reminded me of high school and college when I used to cherish specially recorded cassettes with my favorite songs and custom covers that friends made. Oops, does that really date me? Oh well. I welcome you to read this insightful and open interview of one of my favorite clients!
Why did you decide to have a boudoir photography session?
I had been considering having a boudoir photography session for a few years, initially inspired to give it to my husband as a wedding present. However, I couldn’t find a photographer that I was comfortable with. I also felt a little guilty about spending so much money on something so personal. Recently I started making some changes in my life to take more control of my health and work-life balance. It felt like the perfect time to finally take the plunge and do something special for both myself and my husband.
How did you select Karina Marie Diaz to be your boudoir photographer?
I found Karina’s website and then read a lot of positive reviews of her work. Initially when I called Karina I still hadn’t mentally committed to doing the boudoir photo shoot, but after talking to her for a few minutes I was hooked. She was very calming and immediately erased my fears that I would be the one woman who simply wasn’t photogenic enough to pull off a boudoir shoot.
What was your experience of being photographed by Karina Marie Diaz?
The whole experience, from picking out what clothes to wear, to being photographed, to deciding which photos to put in my album was incredibly empowering. I’ve always been shy and a little uncomfortable with my body, so it was really refreshing to take control of my sexuality.
Karina made me feel so comfortable during the shoot that I wasn’t worried about all my little insecurities. She gave me pointers on how to pose, where to look, when to breathe, etc. It was such a relief to just have fun, follow her advice, and let her do all the hard work. I couldn’t believe how confident and relaxed I felt during the shoot, even during the nude shots. Karina made me feel like every woman has an amazing story to tell, and I was simply exercising that right.
How did you feel when you got your photographs?
When Karina emailed me the edited photos I felt like a mad scientist who had successfully carried out a diabolical scheme. I was amazed that I kept the photo shoot a surprise from my husband, looked good in the photos, and actually liked looking at the photos. At first I was worried that I would be too embarrassed or uncomfortable to enjoy the photos and that I’d never want to look at them. In fact, I had a hard time pulling myself away from the computer for the first several days after I received the photos.
How often do you look at your album and/or digital files?
For the first few weeks I looked at the pictures almost every day. Now that the initial awe has warn off, I look at them every so often when I’m feeling a little low and I need a quick boost. It’s a great reminder of how confident and sexy I felt during the photo shoot.
How has your perception of yourself changed since your portrait session with Karina Marie Diaz and why?
I feel much more confident after my photo shoot. Even if I’m wearing unflattering clothes and my hair is a mess, I know that I’m beautiful and sexy. I have proof of that now. It’s nice to have permission to feel good about yourself, regardless of how you look or what you are doing at any given moment.
What was your husband’s reaction to his gift of your boudoir photographs?
My husband was completely surprised. When I gave him the album he kept looking at a photo, looking up at me, and then smiling. He’s very proud that I did something out of my comfort zone, and very touched that I included him in such a transformative experience. It’s been months since I’ve given him the album and it’s still sitting on top of his dresser, ready to be looked at on a whim.
How has your boudoir session with Karina impacted your relationship?
I feel more confident about myself, so I feel more confident about my marriage. This has been a great opportunity for us both to open up more with each other and become closer.
When do you plan on your next session with Karina? Why will you do it again and what will you focus on?
I would like to have a maternity photo shoot when I get pregnant to fully appreciate and document the beauty and joy of having a baby.
How did Karina's makeup and hair work out for you? Why do you think it made a difference?
I don’t typically wear any makeup, so I was very concerned that my lack of knowledge on the subject would make the quality of my pictures suffer. I only gave vague instructions to make me look good without going overboard. Amazingly, she was able to turn that into the perfect look. She gave me a dark eyed, smoldering look that really accentuated my good features without making me look out of character and overly made up. I’m so glad I didn’t try to have my makeup done at a department store. I’ve done that before and never been too impressed. This was so flattering that I kept the makeup on after the shoot and stayed looking magnificent all day long.
Why do you want other women to have this experience?
I think too many women feel obligated to take care of everyone else but themselves. We should all take time out every once in awhile to celebrate ourselves. Even if you justify the boudoir photo shoot as a present to your husband (like I did) it still is a great opportunity to do something memorable and empowering for yourself.
